Loft Insulation
If your home feels cold upstairs and your heating never seems to switch off, your loft could be to blame. Heat rises, and in a home with little or no loft insulation, much of it escapes straight through the roof. The Energy Saving Trust says around a quarter of the heat in an uninsulated home is lost this way. That's money going out of your roof every day the heating is on.
ICE Thermal installs loft insulation for home owners and landlords across the UK. We top up thin insulation, replace old, flattened or damp insulation and insulate lofts that have nothing at all. Every job starts with a free survey, so you know exactly what your loft needs before you pay a penny.

Step 1 Contact
To book a free, no-obligation survey, call us on 0203 376 4802 or email us at enquiries@icethermal.co.uk.
A member of our friendly support team will get back to you to talk through your loft insulation. To help us plan, it's useful to know:
- What type of home you have, such as a house, bungalow or top-floor flat
- Roughly how big your loft is
- Whether there's any insulation up there already, and roughly how deep it is
- Whether you use your loft for storage, or want to
- Whether part of your loft is a room, or you're planning to convert it
- Any problems you've noticed, such as cold rooms upstairs, damp or high heating bills
- Whether you're a home owner, landlord or tenant
If you can safely take a few photos of your loft, they're very helpful, but they're not essential. Where we can, we'll give you an early idea of cost over the phone or by email. We'll then book a survey at a time that suits you.
Step 2 Quote
One of our engineers will visit your home to look at your loft, following all health and safety rules. They'll measure the loft and check the depth and condition of any insulation already there. Old insulation is often thin, flattened, patchy or damp, and we'll tell you honestly whether it can stay or needs to come out.
We'll also check:
- How easy it is to get into the loft, and the size of the hatch
- The joists, roof timbers and any boarding already in place
- The eaves, to make sure air can still flow and stop condensation building up
- Water tanks and pipes that will need insulating once the loft gets colder
- Electrical cables, junction boxes and recessed ceiling lights, which need to be kept clear
- Any signs of damp, leaks or pests that should be sorted first
If we find old insulation that might contain asbestos, we won't disturb it. Instead, we'll explain what this means and advise you to get it checked by a specialist before any work goes ahead.
Our engineer will then talk you through the best option for your home and answer any questions you have. You'll receive a free, clear quote showing:
- The type and depth of insulation we'll fit
- Whether any old insulation needs removing first
- Insulation for water tanks and pipes in the loft
- An insulated, draught-proofed loft hatch
- Loft boarding on raised supports, if you'd like storage space
- How long the job will take, which for most lofts is a single day
There's no obligation to go ahead, and the quote is yours to keep.
Step 3 The works
Before the day, we'll confirm your booking and let you know what time our team will arrive. We'll ask you to clear out anything stored in the loft, so we can reach every part of the floor. If you need help with this, just let us know when you book.
Our fully trained engineers will arrive on time, in uniform and with ID badges, ready to begin. They'll lay dust sheets along the route from your front door to the loft hatch, to protect your floors and carpets. If any old insulation needs removing, they'll bag it up carefully and take it away.
The new insulation is laid in two layers. The first fills the gaps between the joists, and the second runs across them, so heat can't escape through the wood. We'll keep a clear gap at the eaves so your roof can still breathe. Electrical cables are kept on top of the insulation where possible, and we'll fit covers over recessed lights to keep them a safe distance from the insulation. Cold water tanks and pipes are insulated, but the area under the tank is left uninsulated, so warmth from below can stop it freezing. Finally, we'll insulate and draught-proof your loft hatch. If you've chosen loft boarding, we'll fit it on raised supports so the insulation underneath isn't squashed.
We'll keep your home clean and tidy while we work and let you know if anything unexpected comes up.
When the work is finished, our team will show you what's been done and make sure you're happy. We'll take away all waste, clear up and leave your home just as we found it, only warmer.
Step 4 After care
Here at ICE Thermal, we go the extra mile to make sure every customer is happy.
When the job is complete, you'll receive a simple record of the work, including:
- The type and depth of insulation fitted
- The products used
- Any extra work, such as tank and pipe insulation or loft boarding
- Photos of the finished loft
Keep this with your home records. It's useful if you're selling or letting your home, and when your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is next updated.
Loft insulation needs very little looking after. Just try not to squash it when you go into the loft, and only store things on boarded areas. If you ever have work done in the loft, such as rewiring or a new water tank, make sure the insulation is put back afterwards.
Our dedicated customer service team will be in touch after the job to make sure all your expectations have been met. If anything isn't right, we'll come back and put it right.
You'll also be given the opportunity to leave a Trustpilot review, so other customers can hear about your experience.

FAQs
The basics
Can I still use my loft for storage after it's insulated?
Yes. We can fit loft boards on raised supports, so you get a storage floor without squashing the insulation.
How do I know if my loft needs more insulation?
If you can see the tops of your joists, or the insulation is thin, flattened or damp, you probably need more. Cold upstairs rooms are another sign.
Materials and methods
Why is loft insulation laid in two layers?
The first layer fills the gaps between the joists. The second runs across them, covering the joists so heat can't escape through the wood.
What type of loft insulation is best?
For most lofts, mineral wool rolls laid between and over the joists work best. For rooms in the roof, rigid boards between the rafters are often used.
Standards and compliance
Will loft insulation improve my EPC rating?
Good loft insulation can help improve your Energy Performance Certificate rating, which is useful if you're selling or letting your home.
Do I need Building Regulations approval for loft insulation?
Topping up loft insulation doesn't usually need approval. If it's part of bigger roof work or a loft conversion, Building Regulations may apply. We'll let you know if they do.
Estimates and charges
Are there grants for loft insulation?
Some households can get help through government schemes, which change over time. Check GOV.UK for the latest schemes before you book.
How much does loft insulation cost?
It depends on the size of your loft, how much insulation is there already, and whether old insulation needs removing. We'll give you a fixed quote after a free survey.
On the job
Do I need to clear my loft before you arrive?
Yes, please clear out anything stored in the loft so we can reach every part of the floor. If you need help, let us know when you book.

What is loft insulation?
Loft insulation is a thick layer of material laid across the floor of your loft, between and over the joists. It acts like a warm blanket on top of your home. Heat from the rooms below stays in your living space instead of escaping into the loft and out through the roof.
If you use your loft as a room, the insulation goes between and under the rafters in the roof slope instead. That keeps the room itself warm.
What's included
- A free survey of your loft, including the depth and state of any insulation already there
- Clear advice on the best type and thickness for your home
- Removal of old, damp or damaged insulation if needed
- New insulation laid in two layers, between and across the joists
- Insulation of cold water tanks and pipes in the loft
- An insulated and draught-proofed loft hatch
- Gaps kept clear at the eaves so your roof can still breathe
- Tidy-up and removal of all waste when we're done
Types of loft insulation we fit
- Mineral wool rolls. The most common loft insulation. It's laid between and over the joists, and suits most lofts.
- Rigid insulation boards. Used between and under rafters for rooms in the roof, where space is tight.
- Loft boarding on raised supports. If you want to store things in your loft, we can fit boards on raised legs. This gives you a floor without squashing the insulation underneath.
We'll explain which option suits your home during the survey.
How much loft insulation do you need?
The Energy Saving Trust recommends a depth of 270mm of mineral wool for most lofts. Many older homes have far less than this, often just a thin layer between the joists that has flattened over the years. If you can see the tops of your joists, you almost certainly need more.
We'll measure what you have and tell you honestly whether a top-up is worth it.
Key benefits of loft insulation
- Lower heating bills. Less heat lost means your boiler works less.
- Warmer rooms upstairs. Bedrooms and landings stay cosy for longer.
- Cooler in summer. Insulation also slows heat coming in through a hot roof.
- A smaller carbon footprint. Using less energy is better for the planet.
- Better energy rating. Good loft insulation can help improve your home's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
- Lasts for decades. Once fitted, loft insulation needs very little care.
Signs your loft needs insulation
- Upstairs rooms feel cold, even with the heating on
- Your energy bills keep rising
- You can see the tops of the joists in your loft
- The insulation is thin, flattened, patchy or damp
- Snow melts quickly on your roof compared to your neighbours'
- You're selling or letting and want a better EPC rating
Looking after your loft
Good loft insulation is about more than just adding depth. Once your loft is well insulated, it gets colder up there. That means any water tanks and pipes in the loft need insulating too, so they don't freeze in winter. We do this as part of the job.
We also keep air flowing at the eaves, so damp air can escape and condensation doesn't build up in your roof. And if we find old insulation that might contain asbestos, we'll stop work and advise you to get it checked before anything is disturbed.
Who we help
- Home owners in houses, bungalows and flats with lofts
- Landlords improving their rental properties
- Housing associations and social landlords
- People getting ready to sell their home
- Families with cold bedrooms or high energy bills
We'll book a time that suits you and keep your home clean while we work. Most lofts are done in a single day.
Compliance and paperwork
We follow current Building Regulations guidance and the manufacturer's instructions for every product we fit. When the job is done, you'll get a record of the work, the products used and the depth of insulation fitted. This is useful for your home records, and for your EPC if you're selling or letting.
