Valve Jackets & Covers
In most plant rooms, the pipes are insulated but the valves are bare. That's because valves, flanges and pumps need regular access, so fixed insulation gets cut away and never goes back. The result is dozens of hot metal surfaces leaking heat all day and creating burn risks for your engineers.
ICE Thermal supplies and fits valve insulation jackets across the UK. Each jacket is made to measure for the item it covers, fits snugly and can be taken off and put back in minutes. Every job starts with a free site survey, where we measure every valve and fitting on site.

Our valve jackets & covers treatment process
Step 1 Contact
To book a free, no-obligation site survey, either give us a call on 0203 376 4802 or email us on enquiries@icethermal.co.uk.
A member of our friendly support team will get back to you to talk through your Valve Jackets & Covers needs. It helps if you can tell us roughly how many bare valves, flanges or pumps you have, what systems they're on and how hot they run. Photos are useful too, if you have them.
Where we can, we'll give you an early idea of cost for your Valve Jackets & Covers service. If necessary, our engineers will visit the site to review the current situation, at a time that suits you.
Step 2 Quote
Following all health and safety rules, our engineer will visit your site and carry out a full survey. For your Valve Jackets & Covers service, we'll measure and photograph every valve, flange, pump and strainer in scope and record its size, type and temperature. We'll build these into a full valve schedule.
We'll also carry out a risk assessment, so nothing unexpected comes up once work starts. This covers access, working at height, other trades on site and any hazards we find.
Our team will then recommend the best option for your site and answer any questions. You'll receive a free, detailed quote for your Valve Jackets & Covers service, showing the number of jackets, the materials for each temperature, the fastenings and the lead time for manufacture, along with a likely timeframe for the work.
Step 3 Cleaning
Our fully trained engineers will arrive on time, in uniform and with ID badges, ready to begin the work. Before we start, we'll send you our risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and agree working areas, times and access with you.
Once your jackets have been made to measure, our engineers will fit each one and check it fits snugly. Every jacket is labelled to match the valve schedule. Before we leave, we'll show your team how to remove and refit them.
The work will be completed in line with the survey and quote, following all health and safety rules. We keep a safe working area for everyone on site at all times, and can work early, late or at weekends to limit disruption.
When we finish, our team will check the completed work with you and make sure you're happy with the job. We promise to leave your site safe, clean and tidy, with all waste removed.
Step 4 After care
Here at ICE Thermal, we go the extra mile to make sure every client is happy.
You'll receive a handover pack for your Valve Jackets & Covers service, including the full valve schedule, jacket details and photos of each fitted jacket. Keep it with your building records, as it's useful for audits, insurers and future work.
Our dedicated customer service team will get in touch with every client after the Valve Jackets & Covers service, to make sure all expectations have been met. If a jacket is ever lost or damaged, we can make a replacement to the same size from our schedule.
You'll also be given the opportunity to write a Trustpilot review.

FAQs
The basics
What's the difference between a valve jacket and fixed insulation?
Fixed insulation is fitted in place and gets damaged when it's removed. A valve jacket is made to be taken off and refitted, so it survives maintenance.
Why do valves need insulating if the pipes already are?
Bare valves and flanges lose a lot of heat because of their size and shape. Leaving them bare undoes some of the benefit of insulating the pipes.
Materials and methods
How do valve jackets fasten?
Most use straps, buckles or hook-and-loop fastenings. Engineers can usually undo and refit them in minutes, without tools.
What are valve insulation jackets made from?
They have a tough outer cover, an insulation core and an inner layer. Materials are chosen to suit the temperature, from heating systems to steam, and whether the valve is inside or outside.
Standards and compliance
Are valve jackets recognised as an energy saving measure?
Yes. Insulating bare valves and fittings is a common recommendation in energy audits, including ESOS. Our valve schedule gives you a clear record of what's been covered.
Can bare hot valves be a health and safety issue?
Yes. Employers must control the risk of burns from hot surfaces that people might touch. Valve jackets lower the surface temperature, which helps keep engineers safe.
Estimates and charges
How quickly do valve jackets pay back?
It depends on how hot the system runs and for how many hours. Hot, long-running systems like steam and heating mains usually pay back fastest. We can include estimates in our survey.
How much do removable valve jackets cost?
The price depends on how many items you have, their size, the temperature and the materials needed. Each jacket is made to measure, so we survey first and then quote.
On the job
Does the system need turning off to fit valve jackets?
No. Jackets fit over the outside of the valve, so the system can keep running. Our engineers take care around hot surfaces.
Customer care
Can you replace a lost or damaged valve jacket?
Yes. We keep a schedule of every item, so we can make a replacement to the same size.

What are valve insulation jackets?
A valve insulation jacket is a removable, flexible cover filled with insulation. It wraps around a valve, flange, pump or other fitting and fastens with straps, buckles or hook-and-loop. When an engineer needs to work on the valve, they unfasten the jacket, do the job and refit it.
The jacket keeps heat in just like fixed pipe insulation does. But unlike fixed insulation, it isn't damaged every time someone needs access. That means your plant stays insulated for years, not just until the first service.
What we make jackets for
- Gate, globe, ball, butterfly and check valves
- Flanges and flanged joints
- Pumps and pump casings
- Strainers and filters
- Pressure reducing valves and control valves
- Steam traps and steam valves
- Heat exchanger ends
- Expansion joints and other awkward fittings
What's included
- A free site survey, with every item measured and photographed
- A schedule of all bare valves and fittings, with sizes and temperatures
- Jackets made to measure for each item
- Materials to suit the temperature, from low-temperature heating to steam
- Secure fastenings that are quick to undo and refit
- Labelled jackets, so each one goes back on the right fitting
- Fitting by our own engineers
- A short handover to show your team how to remove and refit them
Materials and options
Jackets are built in layers. There's a tough outer cover, an insulation core and an inner layer that sits against the hot surface. We pick each layer to suit the job:
- Silicone-coated glass cloth for general heating and hot water use
- PTFE-coated covers where the jacket needs to resist oils or chemicals
- Higher-temperature cores for steam and process systems
- Weatherproof covers for valves outside
- Colour-coded or printed labels to match your plant layout
Key benefits of valve jackets
- Fast payback. A bare valve can lose as much heat as a long length of bare pipe, so covering it saves energy quickly.
- Full access. Engineers can remove and refit a jacket in minutes, with no tools in most cases.
- Reusable. Jackets go back on after every service, so insulation isn't lost over time.
- Safer plant rooms. Covered valves protect engineers from burns.
- Cooler rooms. Less heat escapes, which helps controls and electrics.
- Neat finish. A tidy, labelled plant room is easier to manage and inspect.
When you need valve jackets
- Your pipes are insulated but valves and flanges are bare
- Fixed insulation has been cut off during maintenance
- A condition survey or energy audit found heat loss from fittings
- You're upgrading a plant room and want it fully insulated
- Steam or process valves are creating a burn risk
We often fit valve jackets alongside new Pipework Insulation or as part of a Condition & Heat Loss Survey follow-up.

Compliance and paperwork
We provide a full valve schedule showing every item, its size and the jacket fitted. RAMS are sent before we start work. On completion, you get photos, product details and the schedule for your records. This makes future audits and replacements simple.
