Trace Heating Testing & Maintenance
Most trace heating is out of sight and out of mind. It sits under insulation for months, and nobody knows it's failed until a pipe freezes, a tank ices up or hot water outlets fail a temperature check. By then, the damage is done and the repair costs far more than a routine test would have.
ICE Thermal provides trace heating maintenance and testing across the UK. We test, inspect, repair and service frost protection, hot water and process trace heating systems, whoever installed them. Every job starts with a free site survey, so we can see what you have and put together a maintenance plan that suits your site.
Contact our friendly team by calling 02033764802 or sending an email to enquiries@icethermal.co.uk to learn more about our Trace Heating Testing & Maintenance service.
Our trace heating testing & maintenance treatment process
Step 1 Contact
To book a free, no-obligation site survey, either give us a call on 02033764802 or email us on enquiries@icethermal.co.uk.
A member of our friendly support team will get back to you to talk through your Trace Heating Testing & Maintenance needs. It helps if you can tell us what trace heating you have (frost protection, hot water or process), any faults you've noticed and whether test records exist. Photos are useful too, if you have them.
Where we can, we'll give you an early idea of cost for your Trace Heating Testing & Maintenance service. If necessary, our engineers will visit the site to review the current situation, at a time that suits you.
Step 2 Quote
Following all health and safety rules, our engineer will visit your site and carry out a full survey. For your Trace Heating Testing & Maintenance service, we'll review your records, find each circuit and controller and check access to junction boxes and end seals. If there are no records, we'll build a circuit schedule.
We'll also carry out a risk assessment, so nothing unexpected comes up once work starts. This covers access, working at height, other trades on site and any hazards we find.
Our team will then recommend the best option for your site and answer any questions. You'll receive a free, detailed quote for your Trace Heating Testing & Maintenance service, showing the circuits to be tested, the tests to be carried out, visit frequency and any known repairs, along with a likely timeframe for the work.
Step 3 The works
Our fully trained engineers will arrive on time, in uniform and with ID badges, ready to begin the work. Before we start, we'll send you our risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and agree working areas, times and access with you.
Our engineers will visually check each circuit, then carry out insulation resistance, continuity and current tests. Controllers, sensors and residual current protection are checked too. Small faults can often be fixed on the same visit.
The work will be completed in line with the survey and quote, following all health and safety rules. We keep a safe working area for everyone on site at all times, and can work early, late or at weekends to limit disruption.
When we finish, our team will check the completed work with you and make sure you're happy with the job. We promise to leave your site safe, clean and tidy, with all waste removed.
Step 4 After care
Here at ICE Thermal, we go the extra mile to make sure every client is happy.
You'll receive a handover pack for your Trace Heating Testing & Maintenance service, including a written report with test results for each circuit, faults found, controller settings and recommendations. Keep it with your building records, as it's useful for audits, insurers and future work.
Our dedicated customer service team will get in touch with every client after the Trace Heating Testing & Maintenance service, to make sure all expectations have been met. We'll remind you when your next test is due, so your system is always ready for winter.
You'll also be given the opportunity to write a Trustpilot review.

FAQs
The basics
Do you maintain trace heating installed by others?
Yes. We work on systems from all the main manufacturers, whoever fitted them.
How often should trace heating be tested?
Most systems should be tested at least once a year. Frost protection is best tested before winter.
Materials and methods
How do you find a fault in a trace heating cable?
We test the circuit in sections and use fault-finding equipment to pinpoint the problem. This means we can often replace just the damaged part.
What is an insulation resistance test?
It's an electrical test that checks whether the cable's insulation is breaking down. Low results can point to moisture or damage.
Standards and compliance
Can trace heating test records support our Legionella records?
Yes. For hot water systems, test results and controller settings show the system is working as designed. They can be kept with your water safety records.
What standards do you test trace heating to?
We test in line with BS 7671 and the cable maker's instructions. This includes insulation resistance, continuity and residual current checks on each circuit.
Estimates and charges
Is it cheaper to repair or replace old trace heating?
If faults are small and the system is sound, repair is usually cheaper. If an old system fails often, an upgrade may cost less over time. We'll explain both options.
How much does trace heating maintenance cost?
It depends on the number of circuits, how easy they are to reach and whether records exist. A planned contract can spread the cost across the year.
On the job
Will testing interrupt our systems?
Each circuit is switched off briefly while it's tested. We'll plan the order with you to avoid disruption.
Customer care
What's included in the trace heating test report?
Results for each circuit, faults found, controller settings and our recommendations. It's useful for insurers, audits and water safety records.

What is trace heating maintenance?
Trace heating maintenance is regular testing and inspection of your heating cables, controls and power supplies. It checks that each circuit is safe, working and giving out the right amount of heat. It also checks the insulation over the cable, since damaged insulation makes trace heating work harder and fail sooner.
The core tests are electrical. An insulation resistance test shows whether moisture or damage is breaking down the cable. A continuity and current check shows whether the cable is producing heat along its full length. Together, they find most faults before they cause a problem.
Trace heating testing and maintenance services we offer
- Planned annual or seasonal trace heating maintenance
- Pre-winter testing of Frost Protection systems
- Testing of Hot Water Temperature Maintenance systems
- Fault finding on circuits that have tripped or stopped heating
- Repair and replacement of damaged heating cable

- Surveys of old or unknown systems, with a full circuit schedule
- Reinstatement of insulation after repairs
What's included
- A free site survey and review of existing records
- Visual checks of cables, junction boxes, glands and end seals
- Insulation resistance testing of each circuit
- Current and continuity checks to confirm heat output
- Checks of controllers, thermostats, sensors and alarms
- Checks of residual current protection on each circuit
- Inspection of insulation and cladding over traced pipes
- A written report with test results, faults found and recommended fixes
Key benefits of trace heating maintenance
- No nasty winter surprises. Faults are found before the first frost, not after.
- Protects your water safety plan. Hot water systems keep holding safe temperatures.
- Lower repair costs. Small faults are fixed before they damage pipes or cables.
- Safer systems. Electrical tests catch breakdown that could trip supplies or cause damage.
- Lower energy use. Correct controller settings stop circuits running when not needed.
- Clear records. Test results support insurance, audits and compliance checks.
Signs your trace heating needs attention
- Pipes, tanks or valves froze despite having trace heating
- Circuits keep tripping or controllers show alarms
- Hot water outlets are failing temperature checks
- Insulation over traced pipes is wet, damaged or missing
- There are no test records, or the last test was over a year ago
- Nobody on site is sure what the trace heating covers
Trace heating repairs for any system
We work on trace heating from all the main manufacturers, whether we installed it or not. If a section of cable has failed, we can locate the fault and replace just that part in most cases. If a system is too old or unreliable to repair, we'll explain the options and give you a clear quote for an upgrade.
