Sheet Metal Fabrication

Straight runs of cladding are simple. The hard part is everything else. Bends, tees, reducers, tank ends, valve boxes and roof penetrations all need metalwork that fits properly. When it doesn't, water gets in behind the cladding, the insulation gets wet and the whole job starts to fail.

Our sheet metal fabrication treatment process

Step 1 Contact

Step 1 Contact

To book a free, no-obligation site survey, either give us a call on 0203 376 4802 or email us on enquiries@icethermal.co.uk.

A member of our friendly support team will get back to you to talk through your Sheet Metal Fabrication needs. It helps if you can tell us what needs metalwork (bends, tank ends, valve boxes or weather hoods), where it is and whether it's inside or outside. Photos are useful too, if you have them.

Where we can, we'll give you an early idea of cost for your Sheet Metal Fabrication service. If necessary, our engineers will visit the site to review the current situation, at a time that suits you.

Step 2 Quote

Step 2 Quote

Following all health and safety rules, our engineer will visit your site and carry out a full survey. For your Sheet Metal Fabrication service, we'll measure every detail, including angles, diameters and insulation thicknesses, and photograph each awkward shape. We'll also check exposure to weather and any work at height.

We'll also carry out a risk assessment, so nothing unexpected comes up once work starts. This covers access, working at height, other trades on site and any hazards we find.

Our team will then recommend the best option for your site and answer any questions. You'll receive a free, detailed quote for your Sheet Metal Fabrication service, showing the metal type and thickness, the parts to be made, removable sections and the lead time for fabrication, along with a likely timeframe for the work.

Step 3 Cleaning

Step 3 Cleaning

Our fully trained engineers will arrive on time, in uniform and with ID badges, ready to begin the work. Before we start, we'll send you our risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and agree working areas, times and access with you.

Parts are fabricated to your survey measurements, then fitted by our own cladding teams. Every piece overlaps the next so water runs off. Joints are sealed where needed, and removable boxes are fitted over valves and inspection points.

The work will be completed in line with the survey and quote, following all health and safety rules. We keep a safe working area for everyone on site at all times, and can work early, late or at weekends to limit disruption.

When we finish, our team will check the completed work with you and make sure you're happy with the job. We promise to leave your site safe, clean and tidy, with all waste removed.

Step 4 After care

Step 4 After care

Here at ICE Thermal, we go the extra mile to make sure every client is happy.

You'll receive a handover pack for your Sheet Metal Fabrication service, including the metals and finishes used, photos and a note of all removable access points. Keep it with your building records, as it's useful for audits, insurers and future work.

Our dedicated customer service team will get in touch with every client after the Sheet Metal Fabrication service, to make sure all expectations have been met. If any cladding is damaged later, we can make matching replacement parts.

You'll also be given the opportunity to write a Trustpilot review.

FAQs

The basics

Why can't cladding parts be bought off the shelf?

Pipe sizes, insulation thicknesses and angles vary on every site. Made-to-measure parts fit properly and keep water out.

What is sheet metal fabrication for insulation?

It's making bespoke metal parts, like bends, tees and tank ends, to cover insulated pipes and plant. Each part is made to measure for your site.

Materials and methods

How do you stop water getting behind metal cladding?

Every piece overlaps the next so water runs off, not in. Joints are sealed where needed, and weather hoods protect roof and wall penetrations.

Which metal is best for outdoor insulation cladding?

Aluminium is the most common choice. Stainless steel suits coastal sites, or areas with chemicals and heavy cleaning.

Standards and compliance

Will your fabricated cladding match our project specification?

Yes. We work to your M&E or architect's specification for metal type, thickness and finish. If anything in the spec won't work on site, we'll raise it before fabrication starts.

Is metal cladding non-combustible?

Aluminium and steel sheet are non-combustible. But the insulation and sealants underneath matter too, so we check the fire performance of the whole system, not just the metal.

Estimates and charges

Is stainless steel much dearer than aluminium?

Stainless steel usually costs more, both for the metal and the time it takes to work. We'll explain whether your site really needs it.

What affects the cost of bespoke metal fabrication?

The metal type and thickness, the number of parts and how complex they are all affect the price. Fitting at height or on roofs can add access costs.

On the job

Do you make cladding parts on site or off site?

Both. Complex parts are often made in advance, while simple pieces can be cut and fitted on site.

Customer care

Can you repair dented or damaged metal cladding?

Yes. We can repair or replace damaged sections and match them to your existing cladding.

What is sheet metal fabrication for insulation?

Sheet metal fabrication is the cutting, rolling, folding and joining of flat metal sheet to make a finished part. For insulation work, those parts form the hard outer shell over insulated pipes, ducts and vessels.

Most cladding parts are made to measure. A pipe bend, a tank dome or a box around a valve can't be bought off the shelf in the right size. Good fabrication means every piece overlaps the next in the right direction, so rain and cleaning water run off instead of in.

What we fabricate

  • Segmented and pressed bends for pipework cladding
  • Tees, reducers and end caps
  • Removable valve and flange boxes
  • Tank and vessel ends, domes and cones
  • Rectangular and circular ductwork cladding
  • Weather hoods, collars and flashings for roof and wall penetrations
  • Bespoke covers for pumps and awkward plant
  • Protective guards and kick plates in high-traffic areas

Metals we work with

  • Aluminium. Light, easy to work and corrosion resistant. The standard choice for most indoor and outdoor cladding.
  • Stainless steel. Tough and hygienic, so it suits food plants, coastal sites and areas with chemicals or heavy cleaning.
  • Galvanised and coated steel. Strong and cost-effective where impact resistance matters.
  • Embossed and coloured sheet. For a finish that hides marks or matches your building.

What's included

  • A free site survey, with every detail measured and photographed
  • Advice on the best metal and thickness for the location
  • Fabrication of all parts to your measurements
  • Fitting by our own cladding teams
  • Sealed, overlapping joints that shed water
  • Removable sections where valves and inspection points need access
  • Clean-up and removal of all offcuts and waste

Key benefits of bespoke fabrication

  • A proper fit. Parts made to measure leave no gaps for water to get in.
  • Longer insulation life. Dry insulation keeps working for years.
  • Tough protection. Metal shells take knocks, foot traffic and bad weather.
  • Easy access. Removable boxes let engineers reach valves without damaging the cladding.
  • A clean finish. Straight lines and neat joints make plant look well cared for.
  • One team. We survey, fabricate and fit, so there are no gaps between trades.

When you need sheet metal fabrication

  • New pipework, ductwork or tanks need a metal finish
  • External insulation is exposed to rain and UV light
  • Old cladding is dented, loose or letting water in
  • Plant has been altered and the cladding no longer fits
  • Food or clinical areas need stainless steel finishes
  • Walkways and plant need guards to protect insulation from damage

For standard cladding on straight runs, see our Sheet Metal Cladding page.

Who we help

  • Factories and process plants
  • Food, drink and pharmaceutical sites
  • Energy centres and district heating schemes
  • Hospitals and large commercial estates
  • Rooftop plant on offices and retail sites
  • Coastal and exposed sites
  • M&E and main contractors

Compliance and paperwork

We send RAMS before starting, including any work at height on roofs and in plant areas. On completion, you get a handover pack with the metals used, finishes, photos and any removable access points marked. This makes future maintenance simple.
