Acoustic Insulation for Ventilation
Ventilation systems can be noisy. Fans hum, air rushes through bends and plant noise travels down ducts into every room they serve. In offices, hotels, flats, schools and hospitals, that constant noise makes it hard to work, sleep or concentrate, and it's one of the most common complaints from building users.
ICE Thermal fits acoustic duct insulation across the UK. We wrap and lag ventilation and air conditioning ductwork to cut the noise that escapes through duct walls and reduce sound travelling between rooms. Every job starts with a free site survey, so we can target the ducts causing the problem.

Our acoustic insulation for ventilation treatment process
Step 1 Contact
To book a free, no-obligation site survey, either give us a call on 0203 376 4802 or email us on enquiries@icethermal.co.uk.
A member of our friendly support team will get back to you to talk through your Acoustic Insulation for Ventilation needs. It helps if you can tell us where the noise is heard, when it happens and whether you have an acoustic consultant's report. Photos are useful too, if you have them.
Where we can, we'll give you an early idea of cost for your Acoustic Insulation for Ventilation service. If necessary, our engineers will visit the site to review the current situation, at a time that suits you.
Step 2 Quote
Following all health and safety rules, our engineer will visit your site and carry out a full survey. For your Acoustic Insulation for Ventilation service, we'll find the noisy ducts, trace how the noise reaches the room and measure duct sizes and runs. We'll also check that duct supports can carry the extra weight of acoustic lagging.
We'll also carry out a risk assessment, so nothing unexpected comes up once work starts. This covers access, working at height, other trades on site and any hazards we find.
Our team will then recommend the best option for your site and answer any questions. You'll receive a free, detailed quote for your Acoustic Insulation for Ventilation service, showing the acoustic system chosen, the ducts to be treated and whether it will also give thermal insulation, along with a likely timeframe for the work.
Step 3 Cleaning
Our fully trained engineers will arrive on time, in uniform and with ID badges, ready to begin the work. Before we start, we'll send you our risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and agree working areas, times and access with you.
Our engineers will fit the acoustic layers to each duct, sealing every joint so sound can't leak through gaps. Flanges, access doors and supports are treated with care. Where needed, a finish is added to protect the lagging.
The work will be completed in line with the survey and quote, following all health and safety rules. We keep a safe working area for everyone on site at all times, and can work early, late or at weekends to limit disruption.
When we finish, our team will check the completed work with you and make sure you're happy with the job. We promise to leave your site safe, clean and tidy, with all waste removed.
Step 4 After care
Here at ICE Thermal, we go the extra mile to make sure every client is happy.
You'll receive a handover pack for your Acoustic Insulation for Ventilation service, including the materials used, data sheets and photos of the treated ducts. Keep it with your building records, as it's useful for audits, insurers and future work.
Our dedicated customer service team will get in touch with every client after the Acoustic Insulation for Ventilation service, to make sure all expectations have been met. If you need a sound test afterwards, we'll work with your acoustic consultant to arrange access.
You'll also be given the opportunity to write a Trustpilot review.

What is acoustic duct insulation?
Acoustic duct insulation is a system of materials fitted to the outside of ductwork to stop noise escaping. It usually combines a soft, sound-absorbing layer with a heavy, dense layer. The soft layer takes the energy out of sound waves. The heavy layer blocks what's left from passing through.
The noise it tackles is called breakout noise. That's the sound of fans and airflow that passes through the thin metal walls of a duct and into the room around it. Acoustic lagging is often the simplest fix, especially where ducts run above ceilings in quiet spaces.
Acoustic insulation services for ventilation
- Acoustic lagging of supply and extract ductwork
- Treatment of ducts near fans, air handling units and plant
- Lagging where ducts pass over bedrooms, meeting rooms and classrooms
- Combined acoustic and thermal insulation systems
- Acoustic wraps for fan casings and plant housings (where suitable)
- Treatment of ducts in risers shared by flats or offices
- Upgrades to existing ducts following noise complaints
What's included
- A free site survey to find the noisy ducts and how noise travels
- A clear plan for which ducts to treat and with what system
- Acoustic materials chosen for the noise level and the space available
- Careful sealing of joints, so there are no gaps for sound to leak
- Treatment around flanges, access doors and supports
- A protective finish in foil, cloth or cladding where needed
- Clean-up and removal of all waste
Acoustic materials we use
- Mineral wool. A dense, fibrous layer that absorbs sound well and also insulates against heat.
- Mass loaded barriers. Heavy, flexible sheets that block sound from passing through.
- Composite acoustic lagging. Ready-made products with an absorbing layer and a barrier layer bonded together.
- Foil or cloth finishes. Protect the system and give a neat, clean surface.
Where a duct also needs to stop heat loss or condensation, we can use a combined system. See our Ductwork & Ventilation Insulation page for thermal options.
Key benefits of acoustic duct insulation
- Quieter rooms. Less fan and airflow noise reaches the people using the building.
- Better sleep and focus. Makes a real difference in bedrooms, offices and classrooms.
- Fewer complaints. Resolves noise issues raised by tenants, guests or staff.
- Helps meet design targets. Supports the noise levels set out in the building's acoustic spec.
- Thermal benefits too. Many acoustic systems also cut heat loss and condensation.
- Works on existing systems. Can be added without replacing ductwork.
When you need acoustic duct insulation
- Staff, tenants or guests are complaining about noise from vents or ceilings
- New ventilation or AC is being fitted in a noise-sensitive building
- An acoustic consultant has specified duct lagging
- Ducts run over bedrooms, meeting rooms or classrooms
- Plant has been upgraded and is now louder than before
- A building is changing use, such as offices to flats
