Pipe Labelling

In a busy plant room, every insulated pipe looks the same. Without clear labels, engineers waste time tracing lines, isolate the wrong valve or open the wrong system. In an emergency, those few minutes matter. And on sites with steam, gas or chemicals, unmarked pipes are a real safety risk.

ICE Thermal provides pipe labelling across the UK. We survey your pipework, identify each service and fit clear labels showing what's inside and which way it flows. Labelling follows BS 1710, so anyone who works on site can read it. Every job starts with a free site survey, and we can label new or existing pipes, insulated or bare.

Our pipe labelling treatment process

Step 1 Contact

Step 1 Contact

To book a free, no-obligation site survey, either give us a call on 0203 376 4802 or email us on enquiries@icethermal.co.uk.

A member of our friendly support team will get back to you to talk through your Pipe Labelling needs. It helps if you can tell us which areas need labelling, roughly how many services there are and whether you have drawings or schematics. Photos are useful too, if you have them.

Where we can, we'll give you an early idea of cost for your Pipe Labelling service. If necessary, our engineers will visit the site to review the current situation, at a time that suits you.

Step 2 Quote

Step 2 Quote

Following all health and safety rules, our engineer will visit your site and carry out a full survey. For your Pipe Labelling service, we'll trace each service back to its source, confirm what it carries with your team and note label positions at valves, junctions and wall and floor crossings.

We'll also carry out a risk assessment, so nothing unexpected comes up once work starts. This covers access, working at height, other trades on site and any hazards we find.

Our team will then recommend the best option for your site and answer any questions. You'll receive a free, detailed quote for your Pipe Labelling service, showing the labelling schedule, label types, the number of labels and any valve tags, along with a likely timeframe for the work.

Step 3 Cleaning

Step 3 Cleaning

Our fully trained engineers will arrive on time, in uniform and with ID badges, ready to begin the work. Before we start, we'll send you our risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and agree working areas, times and access with you.

Our engineers will fit BS 1710 colour bands, contents labels and flow arrows at regular spacing and at key points. Labels are chosen to suit each surface and temperature. Valve tags are added where agreed.

The work will be completed in line with the survey and quote, following all health and safety rules. We keep a safe working area for everyone on site at all times, and can work early, late or at weekends to limit disruption.

When we finish, our team will check the completed work with you and make sure you're happy with the job. We promise to leave your site safe, clean and tidy, with all waste removed.

Step 4 After care

Step 4 After care

Here at ICE Thermal, we go the extra mile to make sure every client is happy.

You'll receive a handover pack for your Pipe Labelling service, including a full labelling schedule, a valve schedule if needed and photos of each area. Keep it with your building records, as it's useful for audits, insurers and future work.

Our dedicated customer service team will get in touch with every client after the Pipe Labelling service, to make sure all expectations have been met. If you add new pipework later, we can label it to match.

You'll also be given the opportunity to write a Trustpilot review.

What is pipe labelling?

Pipe labelling is the marking of pipes so people can tell what each one carries. A standard label uses three parts. A coloured band shows the type of contents. A text label names the service, such as "LTHW Flow" or "Chilled Water Return". An arrow shows which way it flows.

In the UK, pipe identification colours are set out in BS 1710. Using the standard means labels are consistent across your site and easy for visiting engineers to understand.

Pipe labelling services we offer

  • Survey and identification of existing pipework services
  • BS 1710 colour bands for each type of service
  • Contents labels with the service name
  • Flow direction arrows
  • Safety colour markings for fire and hazardous services
  • Labels for insulated, clad and bare pipework
  • Valve tags and matching valve schedules
  • Labelling of ductwork and plant where needed

What's included

  • A free site survey to trace and identify each service
  • A labelling schedule agreed with you before we start
  • Durable, self-adhesive or banded labels to suit the surface and temperature
  • Labels placed at regular spacing, at valves, junctions and wall and floor crossings
  • Flow arrows next to each label
  • Valve tags, if you need them
  • A final schedule and site photos for your records

Key benefits of pipe labelling

  • Safer maintenance. Engineers isolate the right system first time.
  • Faster fault finding. Less time tracing pipes means quicker repairs.
  • Quicker emergency response. Staff and fire crews can find key services fast.
  • Easier handovers. New staff and contractors understand the plant quickly.
  • Supports compliance. Helps meet signage rules for pipework carrying hazardous substances.
  • Tidier plant rooms. Clear, consistent labels make sites look well managed.

When you need pipe labelling

  • A new plant room, riser or process line has been installed
  • Existing labels are missing, faded or wrong
  • Pipes have been re-insulated or clad and labels covered over
  • An audit, insurer or fire risk assessment has flagged unmarked pipes
  • You've taken over a building and nobody knows what's what
  • Steam, gas or chemical lines need clear hazard marking

We often label pipes as part of new Pipework Insulation or after Insulation Repair & Reinstatement, so everything is finished in one visit.

Pipe identification for complex and high-risk sites

On hospitals, factories and process sites, there can be dozens of services in a single riser. We trace each one back to its source, confirm it with your team and record it in a schedule before a single label goes on. That way, your labels are right, not just neat.

Who we help

  • Hospitals and healthcare estates
  • Factories and process plants
  • Food, drink and pharmaceutical sites
  • Offices and commercial plant rooms
  • Schools, colleges and universities
  • Energy centres and district heating schemes
  • Facilities management companies and M&E contractors

Compliance and paperwork

Labels follow BS 1710 for pipe identification colours. Where pipes carry hazardous substances, markings support the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. RAMS are sent before work starts. On completion, you get a full labelling schedule, valve schedule if needed and photos of each area.
